We recently had the honor of demolishing a truly one-of-a-kind, resort-style residential swimming pool on Nevis Road in Bethesda, Maryland. While swimming pool demolition is nothing new to us, this was the first backyard resort-style pool we’ve had the opportunity to remove.
Built in the mid to late 1960s, this swimming pool dates back to a time when pools were constructed with poured concrete rather than gunite. The original owners clearly loved entertaining, and the design reflected it. The pool featured a swim-up bar, a kiddie pool that flowed into the main pool, and a fully equipped bathhouse—the only thing missing was palm trees.
Access to the backyard presented a significant challenge. The property owner shared that out of all the contractors they met with, we were the only pool demolition company that could confidently explain how to access the backyard while minimizing disruption to the property. Due to the tight access, we carefully selected compact equipment that allowed us to complete the demolition without unnecessary damage.
The bathhouse itself was an impressive structure, perched on a concrete pedestal above the shallow end of the pool. Inside, it featured a full kitchen with a sink, garbage disposal, gas range, and dishwasher, along with separate men’s and women’s changing rooms complete with toilets, showers, and dressing areas.
Every detail of this backyard was thoughtfully designed and exceptionally well built. It was clear the original owner spared no expense. That became especially evident during demolition of the bathhouse pedestal, which turned out to be over-engineered to an extraordinary degree. We encountered two layers of rebar nearly one inch in diameter, spaced just two inches apart and overlapping at the center due to the circular design. The concrete was so dense it felt more like breaking through steel plate than concrete, and we believe a 5,000-PSI concrete mix was used—far stronger than the standard 3,500-PSI mix.
Despite the challenges, the project was completed successfully, and the results speak for themselves. The homeowners are thrilled to finally look out their windows and feel a sense of relief, and their young children now have a safe, open backyard to enjoy freely.
